“A Commitment to Celebrating & Amplifying Our Heritage & Culture”
OUR JOURNEY
Our journey began with a simple encounter: a chance meeting with a local artisan at Bogobiri, Lagos. The vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and soft touch of their batik fabric on my skin captivated me. I was curious about the rich stories and cultural heritage drawn on every piece.
Inspired by this encounter, I resigned from my role as a Product Marketing Manager at a Fin-Tech in February, 2024 to showcase these Nigerian Batik artisans and their work to a global audience through Zakai.
Zakai’s Afro Androgynous Collection – Our Debut
The core-idea behind this collection was to tastefully combine the old with the new. Using ancient African batik dyeing techniques, the ancient African Adinkra symbols, and modern androgynous style, we have created high-quality world-class clothes that empower and give back to the community and tell rich stories about our culture as Africans.
Celebrating Wearable Art – Don’t Just Wear it, Understand it.
Language transcends words. Which is why we encourage our community to understand the meaning behind the symbols featured on our clothes.
The Zakai-BeseSaka symbol is derived from a powerful Adinkra symbol representing power and abundance. By wearing this symbol, you are tapping into a rich cultural heritage and inviting positive energy into your life.
The Zakai-Ohene symbol, a fusion of Adinkra and Arewa symbolism, represents leadership. It’s a reminder of your potential to lead and inspire others, wherever you are.
The Zakai-Dwennimmen symbol is another significant Adinkra symbol that represents humility and strength. Inspired by the ram’s horn, it signifies the importance of remaining grounded and strong, even in challenging times.
“ building a thriving community of passionate batik enthusiasts.’’
